Origin: 2011 Summer Fun
Task: I was amazed by the self-balancing wine holder from 2.001 experiment. I think it's a simple design with engineering ideas inside, so I decided to make one on my own.
Approach:
I decided to go online to find some models for the next project that I want to do in the hobby shop, and then I used SolidWorks to draw out the basic dimensions of the "magic holder".
I followed my SolidWorks plan to finish my self-balancing wine holder. At first, I chose a piece of hard wood from scrap area, and then I cut down to the size roughly about 3’x 8.5’ using a band saw because I was not sure if the wood piece was straight or not. I used a sander to sand down the piece to 2.75’ x 8.25’ to have flat and clean finished edges. After that, I measured one edge to the center of the circle to be 6 ⅝’, then I used 1 3/16’ drill head to drill out the hole. The 40 degree angle was cut using a band saw and a sander to make sure it’s flat.
I tried to put different sizes of wine bottles to see if my magic wine holder can work, and it works on most of them except the ones that has a bigger bottle neck. It is pretty amazing that the wine bottle can be balanced on its own no matter if the wine is full or not. I think one of the way that I can improve my current wine bottle holder is to have a hole that can expand or shrink depends on the bottle neck sizes. I can also decorate or make the bottle holder into a fun shape.
